Week Six went smoothly, with fewer things to chop, more to measure and a fun time making invitations for what Nelson Hidalgo named our “Super Awesome Cooking Party” on Dec. 7. The kids are really excited to invite their parents and siblings and show off their chops in the kitchen. (In truth, they all like to cook at home, so they started the class with good skills already.)

Everyone chopped the green onions while the boys measured the soy sauce mixture. Adrian Sosa later questioned why we added salt, as he found the dish too salty overall, and some of us agreed. Adrian and Nelania Hidalgo kept an eye on the meat mixture while it cooked and Nelson mixed together the corn, peas and edamame in the pan. They were especially excited we were adding cilantro, since, as Nelania said, it’s popular in Latino culture. The ginger was also popular, and Nelania noted how fragrant it is when it’s warmed in the pan. The recipe made a lot of wraps and a large bowl of veggies, so we had enough to share with a few other students who came by. Everyone loved them!
