Farm to Families Initiative

Each week, Farm to Families supplies Philadelphia area families with boxes of wholesome fresh produce at a reduced cost.  Boxes are packed with delicious seasonal fruits and vegetables, often valued at double the price.  Additional fresh items including local eggs and meat are also offered at affordable prices.  Orders are taken one week in advance and cash, credit, and SNAP benefits are all accepted for payment.

Farm to Families works with community-based organizations to address the availability and affordability of fresh food in underserved communities throughout the Philadelphia area by:

  • Facilitating the purchase, packaging, and distribution of fresh, affordable weekly boxes of produce along with meat and eggs from local farmers.
  • Providing food and nutrition education, including food budgeting and shopping tips, basic food preparation and cooking skills, and demonstrations and taste tests, aligned with the weekly boxes.
  • Leading policy change efforts to make fresh food available and affordable in the food deserts of Philadelphia.

Farm to Families is open to all with no income restrictions.

In an innovative effort to target families who are at the highest risk, we are collaborating with area health care providers who are writing “prescriptions” to the program for their patients.

Initially launched at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, the program has expanded to various health centers throughout the Philadelphia area. Families can take their prescription to any of the Farm to Families sites to register and begin the program.
