Every week, our Farm to Families program works with community-based organizations to address issues of availability and affordability of healthy foods in North Philly. Since 2010, Farm to Families has been providing access to fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as meats, cheese, eggs and other a la carte items.

In addition, delicious, easy-to-prepare recipes are included in the weekly boxes and posted to the Farm to Families Facebook page.

“In an innovative effort to target families who are at highest risk, we are collaborating with area health care providers who are writing ‘prescriptions’ to the program for their patients,” says Jan Shaeffer, SCFC’s president. “Families may opt to order and pick up their boxes at either St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children or one of three additional distribution sites in the community.”

We’ve recently welcomed Esperanza and Maria de los Santos Health Centers as new partners in our food box distribution. These sites, along with Health Centers 5, 6, 10 and Strawberry Mansion (operated by the City of Philadelphia), are now writing prescriptions for fresh, healthy food through our successful FreshRx program.

Those receiving prescriptions are eligible for a $5 discount on their first box purchase thanks to Shire Pharmaceuticals, which underwrites the cost.

For either $10 or $15, families can enjoy a box of fresh produce (fruit and veggies). Individual items are also available (ranging in price), including locally sourced meat, eggs and cheese. Fruit-only boxes may also be purchased for $10 year round. Our community partner – SHARE Food Program – sources, packages and delivers the food and fruit boxes to each site weekly.
